IB Chemistry

IB Chemistry is a comprehensive, skill-based diploma program taught over two years. It equips students with a deep knowledge of chemistry's practical and theoretical concepts. The approaches to learning (ATL) skills are the driving force of the curriculum. Students undertake experimentation and investigation in a lab or simulated environment to collect data to be interpreted and results to be drawn. Research, analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills are only a few examples of the skill set that students will acquire in their journey.

Course Structure and Content

IB Chemistry can be studied at either a Standard Level (SL) or a Higher Level (HL).

For SL and HL students taking their exams, they will adhere to the recently introduced Chemistry syllabus. It is organized into three Structures and three Reactivities - as structure dictates reactivities, and reactivities transform structure. The structures include Models of the Particulate Nature of Matter, Models of Bonding & Structure, and Classification of Matter. All reactivities are led by guiding questions as students investigate: What Drives Chemical Reactions, How Much, How Fast, and How Far? and What are the Mechanisms of Chemical Change?

Higher Level students in both syllabi examine the topics and concepts in greater depth, acquiring more extensive knowledge and developing more sophisticated analytical skills.

All content mentioned above is assessed via internal and external work.
The Internal Assessment (IA), known as the Scientific Investigation, accounts for 20% of the final grade. It requires students to conduct and design their own investigation and submit a report.
The remaining portion of the course's skills and objectives are externally assessed via written papers covering the whole syllabus, with various question types, including multiple-choice, short-answer, and data-based questions.

  1. Consistency: IB Chemistry is a challenging subject that requires consistency in your studying habits to achieve the best results! Organizing your time in a way to cover the weekly content is a great way to stay on top of things and avoid accumulated concepts.
  2. Practice: It is well-known that repetitive and targeted exercises are the way to master any skill/ concept! Luckily, the RV website offers a whole set of revision tools that allow you to practice and test yourself on one subtopic, specific topic, or the entire syllabus!
